THE “DIAMOND” MOMS

In today’s youth baseball and softball arenas, moms play just as an important role as dads. In honor of Mother’s Day, I would like to dedicate this column to all mothers who support their sons' and daughters’ youth sports experience.

Mothers are our most devoted fans. They serve as car-poolers, fundraisers, team event organizers, cheerleaders, concession stand workers, team moms, scorekeepers, statistic keepers and coaches.

Another area of expertise our team moms seem to have the edge on is nutrition. Most dads have no problem flying through that fast food establishment right before the game, while moms realize it’s not just about satisfying the hunger – it’s about fueling the body. Moms plan ahead to make sure their kids are armed with healthy snacks (dried or fresh fruit, sunflower seeds, granola bars, etc.) and water or a sports drink.

Today’s moms know that participating in youth sports will provide many memories for their children that will last a lifetime. They know that they can help transform their sons' and daughters’ experience by educating themselves about the game and its rules.

The moms who showed up for the games with their lawn chairs and cameras have been replaced by mothers who now bring their video gear. They get totally wrapped up in the game and do not want to miss one minute of their child’s experience. Many moms plan their schedules and family vacations around their children’s games. And just like dad, a mother’s emotions can help reinforce their love and passion for the game their kids enjoy.

The majority of our “Babe Ruth” moms are able to look past the competitive edge to realize that teaching values, ethics and sportsmanship skills should always be the main focus of their children’s participation. Most mothers will tell you that the teams that do not rank at the top are not losers. If they are playing the game and having fun, they are all winners.

On behalf of all of us at “home plate”, we would like to wish every “Babe Ruth” mom a Happy Mother’s Day. We also want to thank you for taking an active role in your child’s playing experience, whether big or small. We are proud to have you a member of our team!
